Why did Edward V of England succeed Edward IV of England?
Inheritance by a minor; a protectorate under his uncle Richard, Duke of Gloucester. Son — Edward IV's elder son, aged twelve.
The short answer
Edward IV died unexpectedly on 9 April 1483 and his twelve-year-old son was proclaimed king. Because Edward V was a child, his father's will made Richard, Duke of Gloucester, Protector. Within weeks Richard had taken custody of the boy and his brother and lodged them in the Tower of London.
