Why did James IV of Scotland succeed James III of Scotland?

The short answer
Discontented lords rebelled against James III in 1488 with his fifteen-year-old heir at their head. The king was killed at or after the battle of Sauchieburn on 11 June 1488, and James IV was crowned at Scone later that month. He is said to have worn an iron chain in penance for his part in his father's death.
